The Dan Newberry Quartet were one of the very last bands to play Fringe Jazz before the first lockdown in March 2020 and after two years we're really pleased to have them back to the club. All graduates of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff Dan, Guy and Alex are rapidly building reputations as rising stars of the British Jazz Scene and along with the already well known and brilliant bassist Ashley John Long this quartet is a formidable outfit.
 
Here is the review I wrote of their March 2020 gig
 
"The youngest average aged band to ever play at Fringe Jazz but there was no shortage of skill and musical vision. Tenor saxophonist Dan Newberry is a very gifted player with a wonderful tone, and it's clear he's soaked up some of the guile and subtlety of his mentor the great Iain Ballamy - definitely a star of the future in the making. Guy Shotton is a very interesting pianist with a thoughtful approach that avoids clichés and always seems determined to make his own statement. On drums, Alex Goodyear is really entertaining to watch and made a great impression on me and everybody I spoke to after the gig. His playing is like a blend of Buddy Rich and Bryan Spring, and as Spring is probably my all-time favourite drummer, that's quite a compliment. And finally the 'old man' of the band the wonderful Ashley John Long on bass - what a superb bassist, and it's a further reflection of how good the three young guns are that they can get Ashley to join the band. Look out for this quartet, you will not be disappointed."
 
I think you can probably tell I thought they were rather good and as the review suggests - come and see this gig tonight, and you will not be disappointed.
