The superb South African singer Sisanda Myataza Kowalksi is probably best known in Bristol as the singer with brilliant Afro Beat band Mankala but for tonight's gig she has put together her own band to perform an evening of South African Jazz and traditional African infused songs. The musicians will be well known to the Fringe Jazz audience and together represent a truly World Music ensemble with the keyboard wizard Anders Olinder from Sweden, from France we have the wonderful Julien Alenda on sax and Guillaume Ottaviani on electric bass and on drums it's the brilliant Paolo Adamo from Italy.
The impact and influence South African Jazz had on British Jazz in the late 60's and 70's was immense with the arrival of a group of brilliant musicians who fled the Apartheid regime and set up home in exile in London. Musicians like Louis Moholo, Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor, Mongezi Feza, Harry Miller, Brian Abrahams, Ernest Mothle and Johnny Dyani made a major contribution in the development of British Jazz and their influence can still be heard in today's music.
Sisanda represents the new generation of African musicians bringing their influence to European Jazz and while having tremendous knowledge and appreciation of South African, British, European and American Jazz she brings with her the the new contemporary sounds of African music including Xhosa Jazz and Soul, Soukous, Sungura etc...
This is a gig not to miss.
